Clean and accessible toilets are no longer a luxury for highway travelers—they are a necessity. Recognising this, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has once again strengthened its commitment to public hygiene by extending the popular ‘Clean Toilet Picture Challenge’ till 30 June 2026.
This citizen-driven initiative, first launched in September 2025, has already shown how public participation can bring real change. Now, with the extension, highway users across India have more time and opportunity to contribute—and get rewarded—for helping keep National Highway toilet facilities clean.
What Is the Clean Toilet Picture Challenge?
The Clean Toilet Picture Challenge is a unique initiative by NHAI that encourages National Highway commuters to report unclean or poorly maintained toilets at toll plazas.
Instead of complaints going unnoticed, this scheme empowers citizens to take action using technology. All it takes is a photo—and in return, eligible participants receive a ₹1,000 FASTag recharge.
Simple action. Real impact.
Why Was the Challenge Extended?
The response to the campaign has been overwhelmingly positive. Since its launch:
- Around 350 commuters reported unclean toilet facilities
- 265 valid entries were rewarded with FASTag recharges
- Multiple toilet facilities were cleaned promptly after reporting
Seeing this success, NHAI decided to extend the challenge to:
- Maintain continuous public participation
- Improve cleanliness standards consistently
- Ensure faster processing of FASTag rewards
The extension till June 2026 ensures that cleanliness remains a priority, not a one-time campaign.
How Can You Participate?
Participating in the Clean Toilet Picture Challenge is easy and fully digital. Here’s how you can take part:
Step-by-Step Process:
- Download or update the Rajmargyatra mobile app
- Click a clear photo of an unclean toilet at a National Highway toll plaza
- Ensure the photo is geo-tagged and time-stamped
- Upload it through the app
Enter basic details such as:
- Name
- Location
- Vehicle Registration Number (VRN)
- Mobile number
That’s it! Your submission will then go through verification.
What Reward Will You Get?
If your submission is found valid:
- You will receive ₹1,000 as a FASTag recharge
- The reward will be credited within 5 days of validation
- Amount is credited directly to the linked VRN
Important Reward Rules:
- One reward per vehicle registration number for the entire scheme
- Reward is non-transferable and not payable in cash
- Each toilet facility can be rewarded only once per day
- If multiple users report the same facility on the same day, only the first valid submission is considered
Which Toilets Are Covered Under This Scheme?
The scheme applies only to toilet facilities that are:
- Constructed
- Operated
- Maintained
All submissions are verified using:
AI-assisted screening
Manual validation, wherever necessary
This ensures transparency and prevents misuse of the scheme.
Why This Initiative Matters
Clean toilets are directly linked to:
- Public health
- Women’s safety
- Travel comfort
- India’s cleanliness mission
By involving citizens, NHAI is promoting a culture of shared responsibility, where commuters are not just users—but active contributors to better infrastructure.
This initiative also aligns with India’s broader vision of:
- Digital governance
- Citizen participation
- Improved highway user experience
- A Small Click That Creates Big Change
The Clean Toilet Picture Challenge proves that meaningful change doesn’t always require massive effort. Sometimes, it just takes awareness, a smartphone, and a willingness to act.
So the next time you’re traveling on a National Highway and notice an unclean toilet—don’t ignore it. Click a picture, upload it, and help make India’s highways cleaner for everyone.
And yes, that ₹1,000 FASTag recharge is a nice bonus too
